Farm Owner:  Caravela innovation and experimentation centre

In 2008, Caravela (our major partner for central and south american coffee's) decided to start their very own innovation and experimentation center, near Popayan, Cauca (Colombia) – a place where they could push the boundaries of high quality coffee production. They purchased Nelson Melo, a long-time producer partner and friend of Caravela, and named it "Belgravia".

The farm is planted with almost 3 hectares of coffee. The main focus has been on applying best practices, experimenting with new processing methods, developing tools to make coffee production more sustainable and learning about farm management. By having our own coffee farm, we are also learning about the challenges of high quality coffee production, such as high costs of production, the impact of climate change, and labor scarcity. With 15 different coffee varieties planted, it is also a seed bank where coffee producers can source seeds to cultivate new and exotic varieties on their farms.

The lot we have purchased is a Bourbon Sydra, which is a prized, rare coffee hybrid (often a cross of Bourbon and Typica or SL28) known for its complex, vibrant profile with tropical fruit, floral notes (rose, jasmine, elderflower), and bright acidity, balancing Bourbon's sweetness with Typica's crispness.
